01/30/2012 BKCL Novice Tournament Champions Announced

The Baltimore Kids Chess League held its first novice chess tournament of 2012 on Saturday at Poly. A total of 130 players represented 28 BCPS schools at this competition. In the Elementary Division of 22 teams Cross Country EMS #247 took the title with Gardenville ES # 211 second and Patterson Park Public Charter  # 327 and Medfield Heights ES # 249 tied for third. In the Middle School Division of 18 teams Woodhome EMS #205 captured the championship with FAST #338 second and Roland Park EMS #233 third.
 
Thanks go to all the volunteers, coaches and parents that made this tournament an outstanding experience for the players.

Our next novice tournament: March 10, 2012 at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute.

11/12/2011 BCPS Teams Win Big at MCA Susquehanna Scholastic chess Tournament

On Saturday November 12th, students from Baltimore City College and Hamilton Elementary Middle School traveled to northeast Maryland the compete in the MCA Susquehanna Scholastic Chess Tournament.
 
Baltimore City College won first place in the High School Reserve division. Hamilton Elementary Middle School Won first place team in the Rally division. This is the second time Hamilton has won 1st place in the Rally division.     

Notables: 
Tyrone Holmes captured the 4th place individual trophy for City College. 
Ronald Best captured the 2nd place trophy in the Rally section.

11/19/2011 Baltimore Girls Shine at the Mid-Atlantic Girls Chess Championship!!

The Mid-Atlantic Girls Chess Championships were held on Saturday at the Roland Park Country School. The Baltimore Kids Chess League was represented by players from nine BCPS schools. In the Contenders section (u1000) BKCL swept first and second place as Sharatia Jefferson an eighth grader at Woodhome EMS #205 took first with a perfect score and Sydnee Campbell of Cross Country EMS #247 took second with Rose Jackson of Baltimore City College #480 in seventh. In the Reserve section (u600) Baltimore Montessori Public Charter #383 took the second place team trophy as Nadia Mattanah, Abby Shecter, Jenny Cudek and Zion Smith all captured top 10 individual trophies. In the Novice section (u200) Hamilton EMS #236 took the third place team trophy while Govans Elementary #213 and Baltimore Montessori Public Charter #336  tied for fourth. Attached are photos of the champions of the Contenders section along with a photo of the Montessori team and their 7 trophies with their coach Christina Heffner. Great job girls !!!

10/29/2011 BCPS Success at the Greater Baltimore Scholastic Chess Tournament

The Maryland Chess Association sponsored its first scholastic chess tournament ever in Baltimore on Saturday, 10/29/2011 at Poly/Western High School. Despite inclement weather and the threat of snow over 175 players competed with teams coming from as far away as Virginia and Delaware.

 

Baltimore Kids Chess League players protected their home turf as they collected 15 trophies. BCPS produced two individual champions  - Corwyn Shochet of the Midtown Academy took first in the Elementary Novice division while Joseph Grant of Poly tied for first in the High School Championship division. Wolfe Street Academy won the elementary unrated team division while Cross Country EMS won the middle school team championship and Baltimore Polytechnic took the high school team championship. Other BCPS schools earning team trophies included Baltimore Montesorri, Hamilton EMS, Edgecombe, Medfield Heights, Mergenthaler, FAST, City College and Woodhome. Organizers from MCA were impressed with the facility and the turnout and plan on holding another event in Baltimore next year.
