3/06/2010 BCPS 1-2-3 at Maryland State Team Championship!

Players from the Baltimore Kids Chess League posted great results at the Maryland Scholastic Team Chess Championships held on Saturday at Dumbarton Middle School.  At this event players compete in teams of four with no individual trophies given. In the Junior Varsity Middle School Division BKCL teams finished 1-2-3 out of 13 teams from across the state. Cross Country E/M #247 edged Woodhome E/M #205 by one half point with Booker T. Washington Middle #130 taking third. Karon Carter from Cross Country was perfect playing on board #1 going 4-0.  
 
In the Varsity Middle School Division Cross Country finished second in the state behind Takoma Park of Montgomery County. In the Elementary Junior Varsity Steuart Hill ES # 4 took sixth place while Cross Country took sixth place in the Elementary Varsity division. Baltimore Polytechnic # 403 finished fourth in the High School division.

BKCL players next head to Hagerstown on March 20-21 for the 2010 MD Scholastic Chess Championships.

02/20/2010 Edgecombe Circle and Booker T. Washington Take First Place at BKCL Novice Tournament

Two schools that started chess programs this year were the champions at the second BKCL novice tournament held on 2/20 at Poly. A total of 98 players representing 18 schools competed at this event. In the elementary division Edgecombe Circle # 62 coached by Frederick Strickland was led to victory by fifth grader Keenan Parker who had a perfect score. In second place was Steuart Hill # 4 with Mt. Washington # 221 in third. In the middle school division Booker T. Washington # 130 coached by Wilson Lyman was led to victory by seventh grader Daquar Harrison who also had a perfect score. In second place was Dickey Hill # 201 with Fallstaff # 241 taking third. Congratulations to all the new players who competed at this event.

01/30/2010 BCPSS Teams Finish 1-2 at Maryland Girls Chess Championship

Players from the Baltimore Kids Chess League posted great results at the Maryland Girls Chess Championships held during a snowstorm on 01/30/2010 at the Roland Park Country School. In the Novice division BKCL players earned four of the top 10 trophies. In the Reserve division BKCL players won two top 10 trophies. In the Championship division Desire Thomas, an eighth grader at Pimlico E/M # 223,  tied for third which is the highest result ever achieved by a BCPS female player in the championship division.
 
In the middle school team standings Pimlico E/M # 223 took the championship trophy edging Cross Country E/M # 247 with Cockeysville Middle from Baltimore County taking third. In the elementary team standings Baltimore Montesorri Charter School # 336 finished second behind host Roland Park Country School with Stoneleigh Elementary from Baltimore County in third.

The girls will join their male teammates for the 2010 MD Scholastic Chess Championships to be held on March 20-21 in Hagerstown.

01/24/2010 BKCL Teams Finish at the top in the Mid-Atlantic Championships

Players from across the State of Maryland faced off on January 24th, 2010 in the Mid-Atlantic tournament in Arundel Mills.  The middle school under 1000 section, turned out to be a nail-biter as Cross Country Elementary/Middle school succeeded in winning some important final round matches to secure the 1st place trophy!!  Deshawn Wright played superbly winning 4 out of 5 matches and receiving the individual 2nd place trophy in that section.  Also, playing well was Pimlico Elementary/Middle school winning the 2nd place team trophy.  Desire Thomas played exceptionally well also winning 4 out of 5 matches and taking the 3rd place individual trophy. 

Wolf Street Academy was also outstanding in the tournament winning a team trophy in the elementary under 800 section.

01/16/2010 Hampstead Hill, Cross Country, and Hampden win big at BKCL's first novice tournament of the year

Baltimore Kids Chess League held a tournament for Novices on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Baltimore Polytechinic Institute. 76 elementary students and 40 middle school students participated, representing 18 and 13 schools, respectively. Dr. Barney Wilson, principal of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute welcomed students, teachers and families.

We are pleased to announce the following results:

Diego Torres - Hampstead Hill
Alphonso Riddick - Pimlico

First Place Elementary Schools:  Hampstead Hill and Cross Country (tied)

Holt Eiermann - Hampden
Jenelle Jenifer - Cross Country

First place Middle School: Hampden
