BKCL players started the 2015-16 chess season in impressive fashion at the Greater Baltimore Scholastic Chess Tournament on 12/19 at Poly. In the 2015 BCKL middle school citywide tournament the team champion was Roland Park EMS, the 2014 USCF national champions,  edging North Bend EMS by one half of a point. 4/25/2015 Cross Country School Nabs Trophies at the K-9 Nationals in Louisville

Cross Country got two top 5 trophies (second and fifth) in different sections at K - 9 Nationals in Louisville this past weekend. Alan Xiao from Cross Country was the highest finishing player from the state of Maryland at this national tournament.

Needless to say BKCL has had its best year ever at USCF National Chess Championships in 2015 - we had four different schools win team trophies (Cross Country, Poly, Dunbar, North Bend) and we had two individuals (Dexter Amata, Poly and Darien Barnes, Cross Country) take top 3 trophies. BKCL has by far been the most successful program from Maryland at Nationals this year.

After taking a trophy in Columbus at Nationals Sharatia Jefferson of Poly had a perfect 4-0 score on Saturday at Roland Park to become the first female to win the BKCL citywide HS crown. She has been in the BKCL program for 8 years starting at Woodhome EMS #205 when she was in the third grade.

04/11/15 BKCL Students at the National Scholastic Chess Championship

We just got back from the K -12 Nationals in Columbus. There were 1460 players from 39 states and we did well. The competition was very intense with New York and California taking top honors. Dexter Amata a ninth grader from Poly finished third out of 335 players in the u1600 section which is the best finish ever for a BKCL player at Nationals. Sharatia Jefferson an eleventh grader from Poly tied for 22nd out of 355 in the u1200 section. Poly, Dunbar and North Bend EMS all earned team trophies.  Poly, who finished tied for fifth in the u1600, was the highest placing team from Maryland.  I've attached a nice photo of the Poly kids with their trophies.

Teams from the Baltimore City Public Schools dominated the 2015 MD State Scholastic Chess Championships held this weekend. BCPS teams took championships in four of the five sections that were contested. In the Middle School sections BCPS teams swept all three championships. In the MS under 600 rated section Cross Country EMS #247  took first with Roland Park third and Baltimore Montessori in fifth. Paris Day an eighth grader at Baltimore Montessori took the individual title with a perfect score defeating 50 players from across the state. In the MS under 1000 section Cross Country took the title by one half point with Roland Park in fourth. In the MS championship section Roland Park EMS #233 took the championship over Cockeysville MS of Baltimore County on tiebreakers.
In the HS under 1000 section Dunbar HS #414 took the title over Poly who finished second while in the HS championship section Poly captured third in the state.
Cross Country became the first BKCL team to ever win two sections in the same year while Roland Park repeated as state champs for the second year in a row. This marks the best performance ever at States by teams from the Baltimore Kids Chess League.
Next: teams from Cross Country, Roland Park, Dunbar and Poly are all headed to the USCF National Scholastic Chess Championships in April.
