01/17/15 First Annual Marchetti Memorial Tournament Winners!

In the first annual Marchetti Memorial tournament the team from Gardenville Elementary School narrowly defeated the team from Hamilton Elementary School for the elementary team championship with Thomas Johnson ES capturing third in the sixteen team field. In the middle school division Cross Country EMS took top honors with City Neighbors in second and Midtown in third in a seven team field. Overall 72 players competed in the first BKCL Novice tournament of 2015.

Ralph Marchetti was a beloved teacher and BKCL chess coach whose life we will celebrate each year at this BKCL tournament named in his honor.

12/20/2014 BKCL Takes Off at Scholastic Chess Tournament

BKCL teams captured two of the six sections at the Greater Baltimore Scholastic Chess Tournament on 12/20. Baltimore Polytechnic captured the high school varsity section ahead of 7 teams while Mt. Washington EMS took the elementary novice section ahead of 15 teams. Poly also was second in the high school JV section while Roland Park EMS took second in the middle school JV section.  Julius Gingles, a sophomore of Poly, rated 1431 had the upset of the day when he defeated the highest rated player in the tournament rated 1922.

03/10/12 BKCL Novice Tournament Results!

The second BKCL Novice Tournament of the year was held at Poly on Saturday, 3/10. Over 120 players competed representing 26 BCPS schools. The elementary team championship was very close all day and ended in a tie between Cross Country EMS #247 and Gardenville ES #211 with Thomas Jefferson ES #232 in third. The middle school team championship was also tightly contested with FAST MHS #338 just edgely Bluford Drew Jamison MS #364 by one half point with Pimlico EMS #223 in third. Novice players should now be ready to compete at the citywide chess championships to held April 21 and May 22.

01/30/2012 BKCL Novice Tournament Champions Announced

The Baltimore Kids Chess League held its first novice chess tournament of 2012 on Saturday at Poly. A total of 130 players represented 28 BCPS schools at this competition. In the Elementary Division of 22 teams Cross Country EMS #247 took the title with Gardenville ES # 211 second and Patterson Park Public Charter  # 327 and Medfield Heights ES # 249 tied for third. In the Middle School Division of 18 teams Woodhome EMS #205 captured the championship with FAST #338 second and Roland Park EMS #233 third.
Thanks go to all the volunteers, coaches and parents that made this tournament an outstanding experience for the players.

Our next novice tournament: March 10, 2012 at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute.

11/12/2011 BCPS Teams Win Big at MCA Susquehanna Scholastic chess Tournament

On Saturday November 12th, students from Baltimore City College and Hamilton Elementary Middle School traveled to northeast Maryland the compete in the MCA Susquehanna Scholastic Chess Tournament.
Baltimore City College won first place in the High School Reserve division. Hamilton Elementary Middle School Won first place team in the Rally division. This is the second time Hamilton has won 1st place in the Rally division.     

Tyrone Holmes captured the 4th place individual trophy for City College. 
Ronald Best captured the 2nd place trophy in the Rally section.
