11/19/2011 Baltimore Girls Shine at the Mid-Atlantic Girls Chess Championship!!

The Mid-Atlantic Girls Chess Championships were held on Saturday at the Roland Park Country School. The Baltimore Kids Chess League was represented by players from nine BCPS schools. In the Contenders section (u1000) BKCL swept first and second place as Sharatia Jefferson an eighth grader at Woodhome EMS #205 took first with a perfect score and Sydnee Campbell of Cross Country EMS #247 took second with Rose Jackson of Baltimore City College #480 in seventh. In the Reserve section (u600) Baltimore Montessori Public Charter #383 took the second place team trophy as Nadia Mattanah, Abby Shecter, Jenny Cudek and Zion Smith all captured top 10 individual trophies. In the Novice section (u200) Hamilton EMS #236 took the third place team trophy while Govans Elementary #213 and Baltimore Montessori Public Charter #336  tied for fourth. Attached are photos of the champions of the Contenders section along with a photo of the Montessori team and their 7 trophies with their coach Christina Heffner. Great job girls !!!

10/29/2011 BCPS Success at the Greater Baltimore Scholastic Chess Tournament

The Maryland Chess Association sponsored its first scholastic chess tournament ever in Baltimore on Saturday, 10/29/2011 at Poly/Western High School. Despite inclement weather and the threat of snow over 175 players competed with teams coming from as far away as Virginia and Delaware.


Baltimore Kids Chess League players protected their home turf as they collected 15 trophies. BCPS produced two individual champions  - Corwyn Shochet of the Midtown Academy took first in the Elementary Novice division while Joseph Grant of Poly tied for first in the High School Championship division. Wolfe Street Academy won the elementary unrated team division while Cross Country EMS won the middle school team championship and Baltimore Polytechnic took the high school team championship. Other BCPS schools earning team trophies included Baltimore Montesorri, Hamilton EMS, Edgecombe, Medfield Heights, Mergenthaler, FAST, City College and Woodhome. Organizers from MCA were impressed with the facility and the turnout and plan on holding another event in Baltimore next year.

05/24/2011 BKCL Elementary Citywide Championship Results

BKCL concluded its eighth season of chess in the Baltimore schools with the Elementary Citywide Chess Championships held in the Glass Pavillion at Johns Hopkins University. One hundred and forty eight players in grades 2-5 represented 38 BCPS schools at this event. Two first year schools, Gardenville #211 and the Green School #332, had their first champions. Several schools produced multiple champions including Cross Country #247, Gardenville #211, Edgecombe #62, Hamilton #236, Woodhome #205, and Govans #213.  Schools with a champion included #23, #39, #81, #95, #98, #241, #243, #249 and #327. The team championship was won for the third year in a row by Cross Country EMS. Congratulations to Coach Dan Katz and Principal Curtis Durham.
BKCL wishes to thank the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth and the Abell Foundation for helping to make this tournament such a success. Membership registration for schools for the 2011-2012 season starts in July. Enjoy your summer and keep playing chess.

04/30/2011 BKCL Middle School and High School Citywide Championship Results!

Dara Wais of Poly and Jared Epps of Reginald Lewis were rewarded for their chess skills at the citywide high school chess championships. These two players each received $150 as the co-champions of the first annual Dr. Barney Wilson Citywide High School Chess Championships. This marks the first time BKCL has been able to offer cash prizes to winners. Dara a freshman at Poly and Jared a sophomore at Lewis had perfect 4-0 scores. Lewis/Dubois captured the team championship with FAST in second and Poly in third out of a nine team field.

In the middle school citywide championships Cross Country EMS #247captured the team championships led by individual co-champions Devon Campbell and Joseph Grant. Ronald Best of Hamilton EMS #236 and Bonnard Jimenez of Arundel EMS #164 also had perfect scores and were co-champions. Woodhome EMS #205 finished second in the team competition and Edgecombe EMS #62 was third in a field of 23 teams.

The final citywide chess championships will be the elementary championships to be held May 24 at Johns Hopkins University.
