04/16/16 BKCL Middle and High School Citywide Championship Results

In the 2016 BKCL MS / HS Championships two new teams were crowned citywide champions. In the middle school division Hamilton EMS edged North Bend EMS for the title with Roland Park EMS third. In the high school division Baltimore City College took the championship with Patterson HS second and Dunbar third. This concludes the season for MS / HS teams while the elementary championships will be held May 25 at the Johns Hopkins University Glass Pavilion.

04/17/16 National K-9 Chess Championship Results

BKCL sent  3 teams to the National K - 9 Chess Championships in Indianapolis and all 3 won team trophies !!! BKCL has never had every team at Nationals win a team trophy. These teams had to fight back - for example CC started poorly on Friday but went from 23rd to 14th to 12th to 7th to 3rd - what a life lesson for our kids.

Roland Park tied with a team from Minnesota and a team from Michigan for 1st and are National Champs. There were 36 teams and 208 players in their division.

Cross Country tied with a team from Delaware for 3rd in their division. There were 43 teams and 281 players in their division.

Mt. Washington tied with a team from Illinois and New Jersey for 13th in their division. There were 43 teams and 281 players in their division.

In addition BKCL players took home 6 individual trophies including Bryston Bower from CC who tied for fourth out of 281 players, Kamran Guchemand from RP who tied for 8th out 208 players, Nigel Cooper of CC who tied for 8th out of  204 players, Aidan Mcintosh of RP who tied for 16th out of 208 players.  Alan Xiao from Poly took the 1500 class prize in the championship section.

3/21/16 BKCL Wins Big at MD Scholastic Chess Championship

I am very proud to inform you that BKCL achieved two firsts over the last two weekends at the MD Scholastic Chess Championships:
  • Kevin Zimmer a third grader at Roland Park was the top K-3 player in Maryland - the first time a BKCL player has ever won the primary championship division
  • Poly won the HS Varsity State Chess Championship - the first time a BKCL team has ever won the high school championship division
In addition BKCL schools earned 32 individual trophies and 11 team trophies including:
  • Mt. Washington EMS tied for first in the Elementary Novice division
  • Cross Country EMS tied for first in the MS Novice division
  • Roland Park EMS took first in the MS intermediate division
BKCL is truly a K- 12 program with accomplishments at all levels and the strongest chess program in Maryland. All of the Poly players in the photo have been part of the Baltimore Kids Chess League for 6 - 8 years.  Attached are the final standings for the HS Championship division as well.

3/4/2016 BKCL Novice Chess Tournament Results

Over 100 players from 22 schools competed in the the second BKCL novice chess tournament of 2016. Highlandtown EMS # 237 captured its first BKCL trophy ever winning the elementary team title with Gardenville ES second. In the middle school section North Bend EMS captured the team title
with AFYA earning second place.
Next up for BKCL players are the MD Scholastic Chess Championships in March.

1/16/16 Amata and Best Win Maryland Grade Level Chess Championship Results

At the Maryland Grade Level Chess championships held on Saturday, 1/16 two BKCL players won their divisions. Dexter Amata, a sophomore at Baltimore Polytechnic, took the tenth grade prize while Ronald Best, a senior at Baltimore City College, took the twelfth grade title. Both Dexter and Ronald will be receiving a paid entry into the Baltimore Open at the end of the January which is the largest local Open tournament. This event will help prepare them for the Sweet Sixteen event in March which pits the top 16 scholastic players from Maryland and determines who gets a UMBC scholarship as well as the privilege of representing Maryland at the Denker National Championships.
