Meet the Chess Project's Director

media_9;left;largeSteve Alpern has served as the Director of the BCPSS Chess Project since its inception in 2004. Steve brings over 30 years of experience as a teacher and administrator in the Baltimore City Schools. He has coordinated successful initiatives such as the GATE Program, Olympics of the Mind and the 24 Math Challenge for the school system. As Director, he recruits and trains coaches, coordinates chess events and visits chess clubs to work with students. Under his leadership the program has expanded to include 60 participating schools and more than 1000 students. Prior to 2007 no city schools competed at state chess tournaments but during the last two years Baltimore City Schools have won six state chess championships. In 2008 Steve sent Baltimore City teams to the national chess championships for the first time.
