  • 2003 BKCL incorporates
  • 2004 BKCL is granted 501(c)3 status
  • 2004 25 BCPSS schools enroll in the program, total student enrollment 613
  • 2007 BKCL sends teams to Maryland State Championships and the Girls Maryland State Championship for the first time
  • 2007 BKCL sponsors kids to attend summer chess camps
  • 2008 Steve Alpern appointed BKCL Chess Commissioner
  • 2008 BCPS High Schools join BKCL
  • 2008 BKCL sends for the first time teams to attend National Championships
  • 2010 Cross Country Elementary/Middle School wins first place and Pimlico Elementary/Middle School wins second place in the varsity division of the Maryland State Championship
  • 2010 Baltimore Polytechnic Institute becomes BKCL's first national champion by taking first place in the unrated section of the National Chess Championship in Columbus, Ohio
  • 2011 First US Chess Federation begins to hold rated scholastic tournaments within Baltimore City as a result of BKCL helping to grow local interest in scholastic chess 
  • 2011 Coach Christina Heffner is the first of 7 BKCL coaches to receive US Chess Federation certification
  • 2012 BKCL and Maryland Out of School Time Network host an advanced screening for the award-winning documentary, "Brooklyn Castle", at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore
  • 2014 Roland Park Elementary/Middle School won the USCF National Junior High School Championship in Atlanta, beating Brooklyn's IS 318, the legendary chess program made famous by the movie, "Brooklyn Castle".
  • 2015  BKCL has a record number of championship teams at Maryland State Championships. BKCL teams took championships in four of the five sections that were contested. In the Middle School sections BCPS teams swept all three championships. In the MS under 600 rated section Cross Country EMS #247 took first with Roland Park third and Baltimore Montessori in fifth. Paris Day an eighth grader at Baltimore Montessori took the individual title with a perfect score defeating 50 players from across the state. In the MS under 1000 section Cross Country took the title by one half point with Roland Park in fourth. In the MS championship section Roland Park EMS #233 took the championship over Cockeysville MS of Baltimore County on tiebreakers.In the HS under 1000 section Dunbar HS #414 took the title over Poly who finished second while in the HS championship section Poly captured third in the state. 
  • 2015 BKCL sends five teams, the most thus far, to attend national championships. Cross Country Elementary/Middle School wins a team trophy and 5 individual trophies in different sections. Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Dunbar High School, and Northbound High School win team trophies.   
  • 2016 All 3 teams sent to the National K - 9 Chess Championships in Indianapolis won team trophies in their divisions: Roland Park tied for 1st, Cross Country tied for 3rd, and Mt. Washington tied for 13th.
