Meet BKCL's Chess Commissioner

media_9;left;largeSteve Alpern served as the Director of the BCPSS Chess Project when it began in 2004 and since 2008 has served as the Commissioner of the Baltimore Kids Chess League. Steve brings over 30 years of experience as a teacher and administrator in the Baltimore City Schools. He coordinated successful initiatives such as the GATE Program, Olympics of the Mind and the 24 Math Challenge for the school system. As Commissioner, he recruits and trains coaches, coordinates chess events and visits chess clubs to work with students.  Prior to 2007 no city schools competed at the MD state scholastic chess championships but during the last eight years Baltimore City Schools have won ten state chess championships and two National USCF Chess Championships. His philosophy of coaching chess is to keep it fun for the kids and provide opportunities for those that want to compete all the way to their highest level. He is proud that BKCL has become the only K -12 chess program in the state and has had the best results in competition of any program in the state.
