Get Involved

Believe in Baltimore.

The success of our programs is a direct result of our dedicated corps of volunteers. Our volunteers include middle and high school students, teachers, principals, parents, librarians, scientists, homemakers, physicians, lawyers, business people, and so many others. We value the skills you bring!

For those who play chess, consider joining our team of referees at our next tournament. BKCL tournaments occur at least 3 times per year, so there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer. If this is a new experience for you, consider refereeing at one of our novice tournaments first. Or perhaps you are ready to take on one or more of the advanced tournaments next year.

If you are an advanced player, perhaps you might share your expertise with one of our advanced clubs who need extra coaching with chess tactics and strategy. Now that some of our teams are competing at the State and National levels, they could use the extra coaching!

Don't know how to play chess? That's ok, BKCL can always use your help! Volunteers are needed to help set-up tournaments, run concession stands, and direct parents, players and coaches at our events.

If you are as enthusiastic about scholastic chess education as we are and want to help with fund-raising or development, please contact us!

Fill out the volunteer form (downloadable PDF, below) to begin to help. Or contact Steve Alpern at salpern@bcps.k12.md.us.
